The first screen of maal.au: the block word centred at the top, one Renaissance plate of a rider in the middle of a white field, and three short lines set around it.
The services section: Intelligence, Identity and Expression stacked at the title’s size, Identity chosen and closed by its full stop, the other two in grey, and Identity’s subtitle, description and list beneath.

What makes us different

Our practice is based in your reality. Our diverse background across data analytics, communications, strategy and digital content creation, means that we are able to ensure that you are not leaving anything on the table.

Many studios sell brand and social media videos that are loosely connected and call it marketing.

Maal folder - manila

The studio paragraph, read with the pointer, and a line of it in full colour. A painting opens inside the letters from wherever the pointer comes in. The word arrives once a visit and lands as the full stop.

03What we did

We treat every client engagement like it’s our own company — our approach to creating our own branding, digital assets and market research is the exact same one that we use for all our clients.

What we did

We treat every client engagement like it’s our own company — our approach to creating our own branding, digital assets and market research is the exact same one that we use for all our clients.

Intelligence — finding where your effort is best spent.
Identity — making your brand an asset.
Expression — helping you reach the people that you need.

The journey

The problem

“I am not looking for a studio.”

Half of buyers rule a firm out before they speak to it, often on its website.

What they are doing already

01Running the business

Marketing sits below today’s work.

02Checking whoever turns up

They check that the sender is real.

03Asking the people they trust

They ask someone they trust for a name.

Where that takes them

Running the business

No search, no shortlist

Most weeks, nothing happens.

Running the business

A trigger

A launch, a raise, or a sharper competitor.

Checking the sender

One cold email

Benchmarks put it at one to four replies in 25.

Checking the sender

The site, opened once

Two minutes on a phone to decide on a reply.

Asking someone

A name passed on

It travels only with a reason attached.

Asking someone

The work seen elsewhere

They recognise the work before the name.

Where the effort goes

Running the business

Declined

No inbound for now

No advertising, directories, or search work for now.

Checking the sender

Most of the effort

Pass the two-minute check

Case studies that show the method, this one included.

Checking the sender

Some of the effort

Be worth a reply from a stranger

About 25 personal emails, each opening with a finding about their business.

Asking someone

Most of the effort

Ask for the introduction

Referred clients stay about twice as long, so we ask for introductions by name.

Asking someone

Some of the effort

Be known in one room

One local business group and one published principle each month.

The block word MAAL in white on black.
The block word at three sizes: 72, 160 and 360 pixels wide, each on its own rule.
Three fields: white, the tile grey #E9E9E9, and black, each named for what it carries: the page, the tile, the type.
The type scale: the navigation at 12 pixels in capitals, the brand line at 19.7, the studio disc at 31.7, the gallery heading at 42.3 and the services at 88, all Switzer Medium.
The close of the home page: a Renaissance painting of a winged figure over a crowd of riders fills the frame under a dark veil, with the word Maal in white.

The word reversed out, and at the three sizes the site uses most. White, grey, and black carry the type, and colour comes from the work and the paintings. One face, Switzer, at five of the sizes the site uses. The close, where the word floods with a painting and comes back in white.
